Based on the screenplay by Marc Normal and Tom Stoppard.

“Shakespeare in Love” is a stage play set in 1593 London, where young playwright William Shakespeare struggles with writer’s block while trying to complete his play, “Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate’s Daughter.” He meets Viola de Lesseps, a noblewoman who disguises herself as a man to audition for his play. She wins the role of Romeo, and they fall in love, inspiring Shakespeare to transform his work into “Romeo and Juliet.” Their secret affair faces obstacles as Viola is promised to marry Lord Wessex. The play’s opening night is a success, but Viola must leave with Wessex, leaving Shakespeare heartbroken yet inspired to continue writing.
